Warm Homes

Whether you're insulating your home for the first time or topping up insulation you already have, you can make a massive difference to the comfort of your home, as well as helping the environment. You can insulate your home in your loft, your walls, your windows and even your floors. How well insulated is your home?

My home doesn't have any insulation as far as I know.

My home has a bit of insulation but not as much as it could have/I've checked and I'm not able to insulate my home.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

We recycle over 40% of our household waste in Scotland, but we could do even more. How often do you recycle?

I separate all my recycling out and recycle items as often as possible.

If I'm out and I see a recycling bin, I will use it if I can, but generally I'm not sure where to start.

I don't really recycle at all.

I recycle regularly, but probably could do more.

Travel

Our travel choices account for over a quarter of our emissions as individuals. Mostly these emissions come from using the car instead of alternatives such as walking, cycling and public transport. How do you get around for most of your journeys?

Almost all my work and leisure journeys are done in the car.

I don't have a car / rarely use a car for work or leisure.

I usually walk/cycle, use public transport or car share to get to work but I do use the car for most leisure trips.

I sometimes drive to and from work but don't use the car much the rest of the time.

Eat Greener, Avoid Waste

The average Scottish household throws out about £470 worth of avoidable food waste every year. Stopping this waste of good food would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions - an equal amount to taking one in five cars off the road. How much do you do to try to avoid food waste?

I don't really plan ahead and I'm not very good at cooking with leftovers. I think I throw out quite a lot.

I always plan meals and food shopping ahead and use up leftovers so I think I waste very little.

I plan ahead, buying only what we need and freeze things we're not able to use in time but it's not always possible.

I buy what I think I need but often things change through the week and I do end up throwing out food that's gone out of date.

Saving Energy

We can save both money and energy by making sure we turn off lights and appliances and unplug or switch off items at the wall when we are not using them. How often do you turn out the lights at home?

I mostly turn lights off but occasionally I forget or leave an appliance on standby.

I always make sure the lights are off in every room I'm not in and unplug everything I'm not using.

I forget to turn lights off quite a lot and mostly leave things on standby because I think it is easier.

I like my house to be nice and bright and I think having things on standby is handy.
