Grow your own food

Growing your own means fruit, veg and herbs for less. A little outlay is needed to get started, but growing your own food can help to cut down on food miles, trips to the shops and wasteful packaging. It can also be very satisfying.

Produce grown locally doesn’t have to travel far. But food that we grow ourselves can taste fresher and may be more nutritious than anything we could buy.

What to plant when

There’s plenty you can grow in your garden, window box or greenhouse in Scotland. Try these for starters:


Potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, leeks, sweetcorn, courgettes, squash.


Chicory, pumpkins.


Raspberries, gooseberries, broad beans.


Apple trees, rhubarb, onions.

Tips for growing your own food

  • Plant herbs in a window box
  • Grow tomatoes in a greenhouse or an especially sunny spot
  • Reuse old tyres as planters for potatoes
  • Pot some strawberry plants on the patio in summer
  • Help out at a community garden
  • Find a local garden share scheme or organise your own

Apply for an allotment

If you’re really keen, you could apply to your local authority for an allotment. You’ll be expected to use most of the land to produce food. So it’s a great incentive to grow your own food in greater quantities.
